Taj Hotel Renovation Includes an Enclosed Rooftop Restaurant

Developers have formally pitched a major refresh of the luxury Taj Boston hotel — originally the country’s first Ritz-Carlton — to the city’s planning agency.

The hotel, located at the corner of Newbury and Arlington streets, faces the Boston Public Garden and dates to 1927.

A development team, led by hospitality giant Highgate, has proposed refurbishing all guest rooms, and adding more than a dozen rooms, permanently enclosing the now-seasonal rooftop restaurant and relocating the main entrance of the hotel from 15 Arlington St. to Newbury Street, where a Tiffany & Co. storefront is also located.

“Our new concept embraces both the rich history of the hotel and timeless details that, when partnered together, radiate a uniquely Boston feel,” said Carlos Bueno, general manager of the Taj Boston, in a statement. “Our guests will enjoy the sophisticated ambiance and bespoke service that has been the hotel’s ethos since its opening in 1927.”
